NY OCM Launches Public Awareness Effort for Responsible Marijuana Use

17 April 2025

In a move to strengthen public understanding of cannabis laws and safety, New York State Office of Cannabis Management launched a new educational initiative, just days before the annual 4/20 cannabis observance. The campaign, titled “Higher Education,” is designed to provide adults aged 21 and over with clear guidance on responsible cannabis use.

What the Campaign Includes

The initiative uses a multi-platform approach to reach a broad audience, offering:

  • A digital NYS Cannabis Education Library with updated information on products, regulations, and safe usage practices

  • QR-code posters and ads in dispensaries, transit systems, and other public areas that direct users to educational content \

  • Topics covered:

    • Legal rights and restrictions under New York cannabis law
    • Safe consumption practices and THC dosage awareness
    • Labeling standards for legal products
    • Storage and safety, especially around children and pets
    • Rules for use in public spaces

Who Benefits

  • Everyday consumers can better understand how to use cannabis responsibly and legally
  • Medical patients gain practical safety tips tailored to home use and proper storage
  • Business owners benefit from a more informed customer base, reducing risk and confusion
  • Industry stakeholders see support for long-term market stability and compliance

Why It’s Timely

The campaign arrives at a critical point in New York’s cannabis rollout. Recent developments include:

  • Financial support programs, with grants of up to $30,000 for eligible cannabis retailers
  • Expanded opportunities for small producers, including cannabis-focused farmers markets
  • New digital infrastructure, such as tools connecting cannabis businesses with banks and lenders

As the industry grows, the need for consumer education has become more urgent. Misinformation, unclear labeling, and inconsistent product knowledge remain challenges in the marketplace. The state’s new effort aims to close those gaps by making accurate information easy to access and understand.
